Heartland arbitrarily took 500.00 from me for a so called “technology upgrade fee”. My system was working fine. I have been given no real reason for this taking of 500.00 from me. It is obvious that Heartland is not what it used to be. It has been taken over by a degraded fee obsessed management team that imposes fees with no warning. it is a real shame that a once upright and ethical company has descended into what Heartland has become.
Do not use Heartland. I will be seeking another processor.

Heartland is the worst company to have for credit card processing. The Nickle and dime you to death. The have many hidden fees, even after we cancelled our contract with them they charged us the monthly fee of $19.99 and also charged us $502.00 for a technical upgrade. They will NOT reimburse us in full for this upgrade that we are not using and are only reimbursing us $250.00 and their customer service can not even tell me when we will receive it, if we will get a check in the mail or if it will be credited back to our bank account. Most of their reps do not speak English. I would NEVER recommend this company to anyone. Especially when there are companies that charge NO fees. Worst company ever! Heartland I think NOT…More like HEARTLESS. I could go on and on about the horrible service they provide and the other fees they charge……

Count me in. Heartland not only hit me with the bogus $499 “tech fee,” but also added so many hidden charges that my effective rate jumped from just under 3% to over 7%. I process around $100,000 each month, so the shock of nearly tripling my fees, without any clear notice, was outrageous. They buried a vague paragraph in a previous statement mentioning a fee increase but gave no indication of how steep it would be. This kind of practice should be illegal. At the very least, it’s predatory. I’m switching providers immediately and contacting my attorney.

I would not recommend HEARTLAND to anyone. Typically they would charge me overall about 3.4% for debit and credit card transactions. April 1, 2025 they charged me roughly 7.6% or about $11,400 for the month of March 2025. This rate is absurd for anyone. I don’t think that I have had a single chargeback in over five years.
I am having difficulty getting a refund as they want me to sign a new contract. The representative promised that they would give me a refund on three separate occasions, yet, her boss has not agreed to one because I have not yet signed a new Merchant agreement with them.
In my own opinion, I believe that this constitutes a deceptive business practice policy and employs strong arm tactics. Small veteran owned businesses cannot stay afloat when they are getting charged $6200 more per month than they are used to being charged. Think about it, that adds up to about $72,000 per year more than what I have been paying. It’s unsustainable for any small business.
The other problem is when a business has an issue like this it is ongoing, and often forces the business to buy a new POS system altogether, because their hardware and POS Systems often do not function well with other Merchant providers.
I would caution anyone to beware of this company. In 12 years, I have never seen anything like this before.
I was charged $300 last February for tech fees, $300 in November for update fees, and another $300 in December for year-end report and 1099 services. This March, I was slapped with over $500 in tech update fees for their business. The customer service experience has been abysmal – I’ve spent hours on hold only to be connected with representatives who struggle with English. When I finally get to the point of explaining my issue, they claim I’m in the wrong department, transfer me, and then hang up. The company’s service is trash, and they should be investigated and fined by the government.
We have been with Heartland for years and they were once a great company to work with. Now they are just increasing fees, adding huge annual fees, and customer service is horrible. I have switched one of the companies that we used them for and I will be switching my other over to a new provider as well. Avoid at all costs! There are much better processors out there.
Avoid this company at all cost. There are now better alternatives. My spouse used them for years but complained about the costs/hidden costs involved. She finally moved on to another payment system and within a week “Heartless” Heartland hit her account for an “equipment and upgrade” fee of $499, even though she had none of their equipment. Stop and think about that. Charged half a grand for something she didn’t have. In spite of several calls and hours on the phone, Heartland bounced her around the call ques and refused to refund the money or even make an adjustment. One rep also said she didn’t see any notation of previous calls on the matter. The next one then acknowledged the opposite. I can’t repeat the exact statement that their CEO made at a conference but in a nutshell, the insinuation was that money is more important than ethics and doing what is right.
I have had Heartland for years. I am a small business and probably don’t make them a lot of money. All of a sudden in October, then December and now April they deducted an additional $499.00 in newly “implemented” fees to my charges. I never agreed to this and am not in a contract so I should not be forced into any NEW decisions they want to sneak in on me. I tried each time to get my charges refunded and they have denied me. I am so fed up and taking further action as we speak. They are stealing my money and it can’t be recouped in a business like mine. Run, run , run away from this company. They are definitely snakes.
Add me to that list as well. They told us they were going to refund that charge when we closed our account. Surprise surprise no refund and now they’re saying they won’t. It’s a den of thieves over there.
