Background and Roles
Sean Donovan is the co-founder of Finix Payments, a payment technology and payment facilitation company headquartered in San Francisco, California. Donovan co-founded the company in 2016 alongside Richie Serna. He describes himself as an “OG PayFac’er,” reflecting his deep roots in the payment facilitator model.
Before founding Finix, Donovan spent 14 years at Vantiv (now Worldpay), where he rose to the position of Vice President of Payment Facilitators and Integrated Partners. During his tenure, he played a key role in developing and scaling the payment facilitator (PayFac) model, which allows software platforms to process payments on behalf of their merchants. Prior to Vantiv, Donovan began his career at Fifth Third Bank while attending Northern Kentucky University, where he earned a B.S. in Finance in 2006.
After his time at Vantiv, Donovan served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Klarna US, the American division of the Swedish buy-now-pay-later company. He also co-founded BeanStalk Technologies, a routing intelligence platform for online card payments. Donovan’s combined experience across traditional banking, payment networks, and fintech startups provided the operational foundation for Finix’s platform.
Reputation and Public Record
Donovan has not been named as a defendant in any publicly reported lawsuits. However, Finix Payments, the company he co-founded, has faced legal action. In May 2025, Satori Enterprise Holdings, LLC filed a lawsuit against Finix Payments, Inc. in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida (Case No. 6:25-cv-00934).
Donovan’s industry expertise, particularly his pioneering work with the PayFac model at Vantiv, is widely acknowledged in the payments industry. He has been cited in industry publications and has contributed to Finix’s positioning as a payments infrastructure company. For more information, see our Finix Payments Review.
