Cayan Overview
Known as “Merchant Warehouse” until 2015, Cayan is a very large First Data reseller located in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1998, the company claims to serve over 30,000 merchants and process over $7 billion in payments per year. Cayan’s 2015 rebranding was partially intended to reflect the company’s renewed focus on emerging technologies and multichannel commerce, a focus best represented by the company’s heavy promotion of its “Genius” payments platform.
Cayan’s products and services (many of which are grouped within the Genius brand) include EMV- and NFC-compatible credit card terminals, customer engagement tools, P2P encryption, tokenized payments, mobile payment processing, an online payment gateway, a virtual terminal, gift and loyalty programs, and enterprise-level solutions. Cayan also provides API documentation for developers who would like to integrate Cayan into their software. Cayan offers 24/7/365 customer service by phone and by email. Henry Helgeson is the co-founder and CEO of Cayan.

Online reputation and reviews
As might be expected for a provider of its size, Cayan has received a couple hundred negative merchant reviews under both the Cayan name and the Merchant Warehouse name. Common complaints include undisclosed fees, higher-than-expected rates, misrepresentation by agents, high monthly fees, difficulty cancelling service, and poor customer support. Some negative commenters note, however, that Cayan does not charge early termination fees to merchants who cancel service. This policy appears to be a mitigating factor for merchants who have had a poor experience with Cayan.
