TransFirst Overview
TransFirst is a large merchant account provider that was acquired by TSYS in early 2016. The acquisition, which has not yet been finalized, does not seem to involve a rebranding or retirement of the TransFirst name. By all indications, TransFirst will continue to operate as TransFirst, but with backend support from TSYS. TransFirst was privately owned up until this acquisition and processes over $30 billion per year in transactions.
TransFirst’s products and services include credit card terminals, point-of-sale software, mobile payment processing, a virtual terminal, e-commerce solutions, gift and loyalty programs, and sales reporting. The company’s marketing strategy is largely centered around referral partnerships with professional associations, software vendors, banks, and healthcare providers. TransFirst offers phone support and email support to all of its merchants. John Shlonsky is the president and CEO of TransFirst.

Online reputation and reviews
TransFirst is the subject of roughly 150 negative reviews across all merchant forums. Complainants mention unexpected fees, long-term equipment leases, poor customer service, and nondisclosure of fees by sales agents. These complaints have been posted at a fairly regular clip over the past five years, which indicates that them may stem from longstanding protocols at TransFirst. It is unknown at this time whether merchants should expect improvements to these areas following the TSYS acquisition, but there are very few examples within the industry of companies that suddenly offered vastly improved service after they were purchased.
