Overview
SkyTab is a point-of-sale system for restaurants built and operated by Shift4 (NYSE: FOUR), a payments and commerce technology company headquartered in Center Valley, Pennsylvania. As of 2026, the SkyTab product line is being marketed under the Shift4 Dine brand, but the SkyTab name remains in use for the underlying hardware and software. The skytab.com domain now redirects to dine.shift4.com.
Product Components
SkyTab combines countertop POS terminals, tableside handheld devices for pay-at-the-table service, kitchen display systems, customer-facing displays, kiosks, and a back-office management portal (Lighthouse). The platform handles order entry, payment processing, tip adjustment, online and QR-code ordering, reservations and waitlist, gift and loyalty programs, multi-location reporting, labor and inventory management, third-party delivery integrations, and merchant cash advance through Shift4 Capital.
Ownership and Scale
Shift4 acquired the original SkyTab pay-at-the-table tablet from a 2019 partnership and has since expanded the product into a full restaurant POS suite. Shift4 is a publicly traded payment processor that reports tens of billions of dollars in annual end-to-end payment volume across hospitality, restaurants, sports venues, gaming, and e-commerce.
Pricing
SkyTab advertises its software at a low monthly subscription with hardware promotions; the actual cost of running the system depends primarily on the bundled Shift4 payment processing fees, which are not posted publicly. The figures below are reported by user reviews and expert content rather than disclosed by the company.
Software and Hardware
Shift4 publicly advertises SkyTab software at twenty-nine dollars and ninety-nine cents per month per terminal, often with free or heavily discounted hardware promotions for the base configuration (workstation, printer, cash drawer, and card reader). Additional terminals, handhelds, kitchen displays, kiosks, and customer-facing displays carry separate monthly or one-time fees.
Processing Rates
SkyTab is bundled with Shift4 payment processing, so merchants cannot bring an outside processor. Independent reviews and merchant disclosures report effective processing rates in the range of two and four tenths to two and three quarters percent plus ten to fifteen cents per transaction for established restaurants, with higher rates quoted to smaller or newer merchants. Reviews also report PCI compliance fees, statement fees, batch fees, and a chargeback fee that are not posted on the SkyTab website.
Contract Terms
The SkyTab POS System Service Agreement uses a multi-year processing commitment and a liquidated damages clause for early cancellation, calculated from the merchant's average monthly fees over the remaining contract term. Auto-renewal of the processing agreement is reported by user reviews.
Legal & Regulatory Actions
Roma Pizzeria class action against Harbortouch (United Bank Card)
In 2012, Roma Pizzeria filed a putative class action against United Bank Card (later rebranded Harbortouch and ultimately rolled into Shift4 after Shift4's 2017 acquisition of Harbortouch). The complaint alleged that the processor charged unauthorized basis-point markups, annual fees, and gateway fees in violation of the merchant agreement. The action predates the SkyTab brand but applies to the same parent organization that now operates SkyTab.
Securities class action against Shift4 Payments (2020)
Following Shift4's June 2020 IPO, multiple securities class-action complaints were filed in U.S. District Court alleging that the company's offering materials overstated the resilience of its hospitality-heavy merchant base during the COVID-19 pandemic. The actions named Shift4 Payments, Inc. and certain officers and directors.
