Pivotal Payments Overview
Headquartered in both the U.S. and Canada, Pivotal Payments is a large merchant account provider that resells First Data, TSYS, and Global Payments products and services. Pivotal Payments was founded in 2003 and rapidly grew through its acquisitions of Cardex Corporation and Tangerine Payment Systems, two large Canadian credit card processors. Today, Pivotal Payments sells its products directly and through U.S. ISOs like Charge National and, according to some reports, Merchant Brokers Group.
Pivotal Payments’s products and services include EMV-compliant credit card terminals, e-commerce solutions, multi-currency support, recurring billing, shopping cart integration, mobile phone payment processing, PIN debit processing equipment, point-of-sale software, gift and loyalty programs, and merchant cash advance. The company offers phone and email support to all of its merchants. Philip Fayer is the president and CEO of Pivotal Payments.

Online reputation and reviews
Pivotal Payments has received a few hundred negative reviews across merchant forums and blogs. Given the company’s size, this isn’t entirely unexpected, but the content of the complaints suggests widespread problems with sales practices and contract terms. In specific, merchants complain about unexpected fees, long-term contracts, high rates, exorbitant early termination fees, and unhelpful customer service. To better highlight the scope of the issue, we’ve included an alert from the Better Business Bureau’s profile of Pivotal Payments:
BBB has identified a pattern of complaints concerning sales misrepresentation. Pivotal Payments has cooperated with the BBB by providing a response as to the steps they are taking to eliminate this pattern. As of February 11, 2016, Pivotal Payments’ complaints are being monitored for 6 months specifically to identify whether or not this pattern has been eliminated.
