Circle Pay Company Overview
Circle Pay was a mobile and web‑based peer‑to‑peer payment platform offered by Circle Internet Group. It enabled users to send, receive, and hold traditional currencies like U.S. dollars, British pounds, or euros using email addresses or phone numbers rather than bank account details. The service made transfers instantly and without fees and supported cross‑border payments between the U.S. and Europe at mid‑market exchange rates. It included features such as group payments for splitting bills. Circle Pay operated from around 2016 until Circle discontinued the service and shut down the app in September 2019. While once favored for its simplicity and fee‑free transfers, the company shifted its focus toward blockchain infrastructure and stablecoin‑based payments. Circle now emphasizes commercial applications of its USD Coin (USDC) stablecoin and enterprise-grade payment networks rather than consumer peer‑to‑peer transfers.
