About Vend
Overview
Vend was a cloud-based point-of-sale and retail management platform founded in 2010 in Auckland, New Zealand by Vaughan Rowsell. The product was designed for independent and multi-location retailers and ran on iPads, Macs, and Windows PCs, supporting offline operation with automatic sync when reconnected. Core capabilities included inventory and catalog management, multi-store stock control, customer loyalty programs, employee permissions, real-time sales reporting, and integrations with accounting and e-commerce platforms such as Xero and Shopify.
Vend did not provide its own card processing and instead integrated with third-party processors. In March 2021, Vend was acquired by Lightspeed Commerce for approximately 350 million US dollars, with the deal closing later that year. The product has since been folded into Lightspeed's retail platform and is now sold as Lightspeed Retail (X-Series). The vendhq.com domain currently redirects to a Lightspeed-branded landing page indicating that Vend is now part of Lightspeed.
Pricing
Published Rates
Standalone Vend pricing is no longer published, because the product has been merged into the Lightspeed Retail (X-Series) platform following the 2021 acquisition. Current pricing reflects Lightspeed Retail subscription tiers rather than the historical Vend plans.
Subscription Tiers
Lightspeed Retail is sold on monthly subscription tiers that scale by feature set and number of locations, with separate add-ons for advanced reporting, e-commerce, loyalty, and accounting integrations. Discounts are typically offered for annual billing.
Payment Processing Fees
Vend itself did not charge card processing fees, since transaction processing was handled by integrated third-party processors selected by the merchant. Under Lightspeed Retail, merchants can use Lightspeed Payments at published flat rates or continue with a third-party processor on per-transaction terms negotiated separately. Hardware such as receipt printers, barcode scanners, and card terminals is sold separately and is not included in the software subscription.
