About Square for Retail

Overview

Square for Retail is a point-of-sale software and hardware platform built by Block, Inc., the parent company of Square. It is aimed at retail merchants and combines payment processing, inventory management, customer records, and reporting in a single subscription product.

Company background

Block, Inc. was founded in 2009 as Square, Inc. by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey and rebranded as Block in December 2021 to reflect a wider portfolio that includes the Square seller business, Cash App, TIDAL, and other units. The company is headquartered in Oakland, California, and is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Jack Dorsey remains the chief executive and a co-founder.

Product overview

Square for Retail provides retailers with a touchscreen point-of-sale interface, inventory tools such as bulk item import and low-stock alerts, multi-location stock synchronization, vendor profiles, purchase order creation, and barcode label printing. It works with Square's first-party hardware including the Square Register, Square Terminal, and barcode scanners, and integrates with the broader Square ecosystem covering payroll, marketing, gift cards, and customer loyalty. Higher-tier plans add features such as advanced reporting, vendor sales analytics, and additional team-management controls.

Pricing

Subscription tiers

Square for Retail is offered on three subscription tiers reported by independent expert content as a Free plan at no monthly fee, a Plus plan at $49 per month per location, and a Premium plan at $149 per month per location. Some expert content also describes the Premium tier as custom-priced for larger merchants. All paid tiers add functionality and lower processing rates compared with the Free plan.

Processing rates

On the Free plan, in-person card-present transactions are reported at 2.6% plus 15 cents, online and e-commerce transactions at 3.3% plus 30 cents, and manually keyed transactions at 3.5% plus 15 cents. The Plus plan is reported to reduce in-person rates to 2.5% plus 15 cents and online rates to 2.9% plus 30 cents. The Premium plan is reported to further reduce in-person rates to 2.4% plus 15 cents while keeping online rates at 2.9% plus 30 cents.

Other fees

Funds settle to the merchant's bank on a next-business-day schedule, with optional instant transfers available for an additional per-transfer fee. Hardware such as registers, terminals, and barcode scanners is sold separately and is not part of the monthly subscription cost. Chargebacks are handled through Square's standard dispute resolution process.

Legal & Regulatory Actions

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau order, January 2025

On January 16, 2025, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Block, Inc. to pay up to $175 million in connection with its Cash App business, with up to $120 million directed to consumer redress and a $55 million civil penalty paid to the bureau's victims relief fund. The order found that Block had used weak security protocols, conducted incomplete investigations of unauthorized transactions, and operated a customer support phone line that for years did not connect users with a live representative. The order also requires Block to establish 24-hour live customer service. Further detail is published by the agency at consumerfinance.gov.

Securities fraud class action, 2025

In early 2025, multiple securities fraud class action complaints were filed against Block, Inc. on behalf of investors who purchased Block Class A common stock between February 26, 2020 and April 30, 2024. The complaints allege that Block failed to disclose compliance lapses at Square and Cash App, including inadequate customer identity verification and transaction monitoring practices. The actions remain ongoing.
